If average daily census rises by 5 patients
How this average daily census calculator works
Average daily census turns a month or year of inpatient activity into one easy number: how many admitted patients the hospital was looking after on a typical day. It is the basis for nurse staffing, diet and linen planning, and it links directly to bed occupancy.
Average daily census = Total inpatient service days ÷ Number of days in the period
Implied bed occupancy = Average daily census ÷ Available beds × 100
Inpatient service days are counted from the daily midnight census: the number of admitted patients in beds at midnight, added up for every day in the period. This is the same number many hospitals call occupied bed days, which is why ADC ÷ available beds gives the same answer as the bed occupancy rate formula when the bed count is constant.
Average daily census calculation: worked example
A 120-bed hospital adds up its midnight census for every day of a 31-day month and gets 2,604 inpatient service days.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily census | 2,604 ÷ 31 | 84 patients |
| Implied bed occupancy | 84 ÷ 120 × 100 | 70% |
| Average empty beds | 120 − 84 | 36 beds |
| Check with bed days | 2,604 ÷ (120 × 31) × 100 | 70% |
Average daily census in hospital operations
ADC is most useful when it is tracked by ward and bed type, not just for the whole hospital. ICU, general ward, maternity and paediatrics each have different demand patterns and staffing needs, and a single hospital-wide average can hide a ward that is consistently full while another is half empty. Day-care, observation and emergency beds should be defined consistently and usually reported separately, so that month-to-month and branch-to-branch comparisons stay fair.
Because ADC is an average, it also hides peaks. Read it alongside the day-by-day census, weekday and weekend patterns, and the discharge timing that decides whether a patient counts at midnight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average daily census meaning in a hospital?
Average daily census (ADC) means the average number of admitted inpatients a hospital has on any day of a period, usually based on the midnight census. It shows the typical daily inpatient load.
What is the average daily census formula?
Average daily census = Total inpatient service days ÷ Number of days in the period. Inpatient service days are the sum of the daily midnight census for the period.
How do you do an average daily census calculation?
Record the number of admitted patients in beds at midnight each day, add these counts for the whole period, then divide by the number of days. For example, 2,604 inpatient service days in a 31-day month give an average daily census of 84.
What are inpatient service days?
Inpatient service days are the total days of care given to admitted patients in a period, counted from the daily midnight census. Many hospitals call the same number occupied bed days.
How is average daily census related to bed occupancy rate?
Divide average daily census by available beds and multiply by 100 to get bed occupancy. For example, an ADC of 84 in a 120-bed hospital means 70% occupancy.
Should average daily census include day-care or observation patients?
Average daily census normally counts admitted inpatients at the midnight census. Day-care, observation and emergency beds should be defined consistently and usually reported separately so comparisons stay fair.
