How this ARPOB calculator works

ARPOB (Average Revenue Per Occupied Bed) is net inpatient revenue divided by occupied bed days. It shows how much each occupied bed earns per day, so you can compare months, wards and branches regardless of size or occupancy swings.

ARPOB = Net IPD revenue ÷ Occupied bed days
Occupied bed days ≈ Beds × Occupancy % × Days in period

For the most accurate result, use the actual total from your daily midnight census for occupied bed days, and net revenue after discounts, refunds, cancellations and insurer deductions. Read the full ARPOB guide with formula and India benchmarks.

Indicative ARPOB ranges in India

Hospital typeTypical ARPOB per day
Small nursing home / Tier-3 town₹8,000 – ₹15,000
Mid-size secondary care₹15,000 – ₹30,000
Tertiary / multi-specialty (metro)₹30,000 – ₹60,000+

These are broad, indicative ranges. Specialty mix, city, payer mix and package rates move ARPOB significantly, so your own trend over time matters more than any external benchmark.

Why ARPOB is often lower than it should be

Because ARPOB uses net revenue, every leak reduces it directly while occupied bed days stay the same. The usual culprits are:

  • OT and ward consumables used but never charged
  • Medicines dispensed but cancelled or returned without the stock trail matching (see pharmacy inventory reconciliation)
  • Bedside procedures documented but missing from the final bill
  • Discounts and write-offs without an approval trail
  • Insurance and TPA deductions accepted without review

Recovering revenue the hospital has already earned is usually the fastest way to raise ARPOB. Read the guide to the seven most common hospital revenue leaks, or see how revenue leakage detection agents reconcile billing, pharmacy, inventory and claims continuously.

Frequently asked questions

What is ARPOB in a hospital?

ARPOB stands for Average Revenue Per Occupied Bed. It is the average net inpatient (IPD) revenue a hospital earns for each occupied bed per day.

How do you calculate ARPOB?

Divide net IPD revenue for a period by the occupied bed days in the same period. For example, ₹2.9 crore of net IPD revenue over 1,950 occupied bed days gives an ARPOB of about ₹14,900.

How do I calculate occupied bed days?

Add up the number of occupied beds at each daily (usually midnight) census across the period. If you only know occupancy, estimate it as total beds × occupancy rate × number of days.

Should ARPOB use gross or net revenue?

Use net revenue, after discounts, refunds, cancellations and insurer deductions. Gross revenue flatters ARPOB and hides the revenue leakage you are trying to find.

What is a good ARPOB for an Indian hospital?

It varies by specialty mix, city and payer mix. As indicative ranges, small nursing homes often see ₹8,000–₹15,000, mid-size secondary hospitals ₹15,000–₹30,000 and metro tertiary hospitals ₹30,000–₹60,000 or more per occupied bed per day.

How can a hospital increase ARPOB?

Start by capturing revenue already earned: complete charge capture at the point of care, reconcile pharmacy and consumables to billing, control discounts and cancellations, and reduce insurance deductions. Then review case mix and tariffs.
